"We can work non-stop for up to 72 hours, we don't need to stop at night," he said. The robot is operated by a 25-strong crew. Our attitude was: We are close, we have to go," Lefort said. Ifremer sent the Atalante ship with its robot at the request of the U.S. Ifremer was part of the team that located the wreck of the Titanic in 1985 with American underwater archaeologist Robert Ballard.įrench explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who is reported to be among the five people inside the missing submersible, previously worked at Ifremer and piloted its flagship Nautile submarine that was used to examine the Titanic wreck. It is also equipped with manipulating arms which could be used to extricate the sub, such as by sectioning cables or things that would be blocking it at the bottom," he said. "Victor is able to do visual exploration with all the video equipment it has. The wreck lies at a depth of about 12,500 feet (3,810 metres). ![]() Titan went missing with five people on board shortly after starting its descent on Sunday to the Titanic, the British ocean liner that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. ![]() "Victor is not capable of lifting the submarine up on its own," said Olivier Lefort, the head of naval operations at Ifremer, the state-run French ocean research institute which operates the robot.īut he told Reuters the robot could help hook the 10-tonne submersible called Titan to a ship with the capacity to lift it to the surface. The robot, which is aboard a French research vessel, is expected to arrive late on Wednesday, giving it a limited window to provide assistance before the Thursday morning deadline when the missing submersible's air supply is expected to run out. The unmanned robot, called Victor 6000, can dive deeper than other equipment now at the site in the North Atlantic and has arms that can be remotely controlled to cut cables or perform other manoeuvres to release a stuck vessel, the operator said. It was released to extremely mixed reviews–its MobyGames ratings, range from 92 to 20–and gamers weren’t too willing to forgive its flaws, considering how strongly it’d been hyped and how potentially awesome it should have been, coming from two of Britain’s greatest humorists.PARIS, June 21 (Reuters) - A French robot that can dive to 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) underwater is on its way to help find a tourist submersible that vanished as it descended to the Titanic wreck and it could help free the sub if it is trapped, its operator said on Wednesday. Now, put all of these “features” into a game that took two years to make, was hyped to hell and back, and was, at the time, one of the most expensive games ever made, and you’ve got Starship Titanic. That, or plan on ripping out half your hair because you didn’t know that a robotic parrot enjoys eating brazil nuts instead of walnuts. If you ever plan on trying Starship Titanic out, then, for the love of God, use a strategy guide. It literally got so bad that later versions of the game came with a 120 page walkthrough, packaged completely free of charge. Yeah, there were a couple of clever dialogue exchanges programmed in–most notably, you could ask several of the robots about the Spice Girls and start a three-minute conversation–but for the most part, the entire conversation system was broken.Īdditionally, Starship Titanic remains one of the most absurdly difficult adventure games ever made: the puzzles often seem designed to be funny, rather than challenging, and as a result their solutions range anywhere from obscure to downright ridiculous. This means that your enjoyment of the game relies entirely on the gameplay, which ain’t exactly the greatest thing in the world.ĭespite how intensely hyped the game’s conversation system was, it really boiled down to typing in keywords that the parser would recognize, which usually resulted in a robot giving you an extremely cryptic hint. The game gives you a goal at the very beginning, and you spend the rest of the entire game trying to accomplish that goal, and that goal alone. There are no plot developments, no storyline, and no characters apart from the humanoid robots on whom you constantly rely for hints. The entire game consists of running around the ship, collecting computer parts and solving puzzles so you can reassemble the AI that controls the ship. While Starship Titanic is pretty goddamned hard (more on that later), it is not, by any means, deep. ![]()
